Last Saturday at PROJECT we welcomed White Faux Taxidermy in a group
show benefiting S.T.A.R.T Animal Rescue. The night was a huge success, and it was great seeing some of our favorite artist friends working on an entirely different and unique medium. Lina from the LA WEEKLY posted a slideshow and LA Confidential Magazine wrote about it HERE! The show is there through December 8 and fits the holiday vibe quite nicely!

Ernie Wolfe Gallery presents ‘The Horror The Horror’ and
celebrates the publication of Extreme
Canvas 2: The Golden Age of Hand Painted Movie Posters from Ghana. The exhibit, excerpted from Wolfe’s
latest book, features 23 paintings by 8 artists, carefully selected by
musician, artist and horror flick aficionado, Brandon Boyd. The featured posters are all published, hand painted, unique
and original works of art, by known artists from the Golden Age of this exclusively
Ghanaian tradition that existed fleetingly from the late 1980s until the late
1990s, and were created for use within the context of their local tradition.
Says Wolfe
about the collection, “Starting
in about 1985 and continuing until just before the millennium, there existed a
Golden Age of hand-painted imagination-driven movie posters in Ghana. This was
a time when market forces from abroad were minimal and these unique and exotic
paintings were created solely for the local Ghanaian movie viewing audience.
The best and brightest artists of a generation competed fiercely and directly
in the public eye for this exciting new work, being careful to sign and date
the great majority of these paintings. Their hand-made artistry stood its
ground against the inevitable tide of printing technology that globalization
inexorably thrust upon them, and for a short while, carved out a small oasis in
time where man actually won out over machines.”

project which began in early 2013, Tankian says, “The urge
came to me in the discovery that music has become so temporal and devalued in
the world today, so I wanted to create an exclusive experience…something unique
for someone to hold so they become the only person to experience this. I'm aiming to have people SEE the music and HEAR the
art. Using a modern app, we're able to take Kandinsky's Synesthesia to a whole
new level."
Serj Tankian was on born August 21, 1967
in Beirut, Lebanon and is an Armenian-American singer-songwriter, composer,
multi-instrumentalist, record producer, poet, painter and political activist. He is best known as the lead vocalist, songwriter,
keyboardist and occasional live rhythm guitarist of the metal band System of a Down. During his musical career, Tankian
has released five albums with System of a Down, one with Arto Tunçboyacıyan (Serart), as well as four solo albums Elect the Dead,Imperfect Harmonies, Harakiri, and Orca, his first real classical
symphony. A live orchestral version of Elect the Dead incorporating
the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra named Elect the Dead Symphony was released in
2009. He's also released 2 books of poetry, Cool Gardens and Glaring Through
Oblivion. In 2002, Tankian
and Rage Against the Machine/Audioslave guitarist Tom Morello co-founded a non-profit
organization, Axis of Justice. Tankian also founded the record label Serjical Strike Records and in 2011 he was awarded
the Armenian Prime Minister's Medal for his contributions to the recognition of
the Armenian Genocide and the advancement of
music. For more information

PROJECT Gallery Presents FIGURATIVELY SPEAKING
WHEN: Opening:
Thursday, October 10, 7pm – 10pm
Exhibit
runs through: November 10
WHERE: PROJECT Gallery: 1553 North Cahuenga Blvd. Hollywood
90028
WHAT: PROJECT
Gallery is proud to present FIGURATIVELY SPEAKING; a group exhibition featuring
Brian Batt, Erin Hammond and Christina Angelina and their unique and vastly
varying styles of figurative work through: (respectively) reconstructed
portraiture collage work and pointillism, expressive emotionalism and eclectic romanticism,
and the examination of raw beauty in the unexpected.
BRIAN
BATT
Brian Batt is an east coast native currently based in New
York City. He took his first painting course while still in junior
high at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and would go on to graduate from
Hartford Art School in Connecticut as an illustration major. Immediately upon
graduation, portrait requests started coming in. References were often photos
of family members that had passed away, occasionally, children that had died
tragically young. When the paintings were finished, the surviving family
members would be overwhelmed with emotion, reeling from likeness and spirit
that were captured. The power in these moments had a profound impact on Brian
and led him to pursue portraiture more seriously.
He began painting in the pixelated/mosaic style that Chuck
Close trail blazed, interpreting the technique through his own style. Pointillism
or Pixel Pointillism involves applying distinct dots or squares of pure color
in patterns to form an image. Whether working in photorealism or
pointillism, Brian combines aspects of classic portraiture with pop cultural
iconography. He explores the idea of an image consisting of thousands of
smaller shapes, each shape being essential to the larger picture. His
paintings have landed on the walls of John Krasinski and Reese Witherspoon and
his work is regularly commissioned for important galas and charity events. For
more information on Brian please visit: http://battstudios.com

ERIN
HAMMOND
Erin
Nicole Hammond was born in Milwaukee, WI. She grew up mainly near the cornfields
and lakes near the border of Illinois. She studied Fine Art with an emphasis on
painting and sculpture at a university in her community; University of
Wisconsin Parkside. She has lived since then in the small town of Caledonia
right outside of downtown Racine, until recently making a move to Los Angeles.
Being a
girl of many traits, collaborating painting, acting, and modeling Erin has has been
known to express a sort of fashion statement through her work as well as an
eclectic sense of style in her pieces. She loves to get away and create and
cites the existence and process of life, often conveying both the surreal and
unflattering parts of life and portraying women as her subject. A lot of her
work is created first by writing as odd as that sounds which later turns to
sketching, and later into visual understanding. She has graced gallery walls
nationwide and her work held in private collections throughout the U.S. For
more information on Erin please visit: http://www.erinhammond.com/artist/

CHRISTINA ANGELINA
Fine artist, street artist,
photographer and producer: Angelina’s unique talent lies within every image she
constructs, in every single stroke of her brush, in every color she mixes, in
every mystical story behind her work. Her education varies from a BFA in
Art in from UCLA to NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and the Art Center College
of Design. Most recently, Christina completed several paintings and
window dressings exclusively for Christian Louboutin at Neiman Marcus Beverly
Hills (the paintings have now become part of Neiman Marcus’ permanent
collection). In September of 2011 she created the cover art for Rodrigo Y
Gabriela’s latest album, “Area 52”. Angelina has also appeared as herself
in several documentaries, films and most recently the music video for Van
Hunt's latest single, "Eyes Like Pearls," which debuted in December
on Rolling Stone. Angelina is a process-oriented artist and her objective is to
find the temporal and raw moments that define a lifetime and then cram all the
details and nuances into one image. When she isn’t bound by professional
commitments or finishing a painting in her studio you can find her
wheat-pasting her drawings to the beautifully weathered and sun-stained city
walls. For more information on Christina

WHAT a month!!!!! Event wrap ups...
This has been perhaps the busiest, and best month Art Duet has ever had. Well, one of them at least! It was a whirlwind and so much happened it's important to document before moving on!
Early in the month, we closed the magic that was the exhibit Indian Larry by Timothy White - it was so powerful to be a part of celebrating Larry's legacy and we walked away with an entirely different perspective about what a show can be!! Read about it here in the LA Weekly, an article on page 44 of Bl!sss Mag (written by Jen) or the great wrap up that our friends at CARTWHEEL put together.
On Wednesday, September 18 Brandon had his first book signing for So The Echo at Bookmarc in West Hollywood. Loyal fans formed a line at 10 am, if not earlier, and by the start of the event at 5 pm it wrapped around 3 street corners, and stayed that way until 830!!!! It was a tremendously AMAZING night and a great start to appearances and signings around So The Echo. Great coverage in Nylon Guys, The Hollywood Reporter, and many others...
Lots of great press for both Sons of The Sea and So The Echo can currently be found on Brandon's website. We are now looking very forward to the NY signings for So The Echo - the first on Sunday, September 29 at Looney Tunes in Long Island and one the following day, September 30, at Barnes and Noble in Tribeca.
More signings and appearances will definitely be scheduled so please stay tuned!!!!

Soon after the close of Indian Larry, PROJECT opened the doors to ROCK FIGHT. A collaboration with The Morrison Hotel Gallery, curated by Timothy White. This completely unique exhibit that paired vintage 60's and 70's wrestling and fight photos taken by Theo Ehret with the most iconic rock and roll imagery imaginable, thus exploring the correlation of violence and showmanship in both "arenas". Renowned photographers Henry Diltz, Bob Gruen, Janette Beckman, Lynn Goldsmith and many others all had work in the show. National and local exposure included Entertainment Weekly, LA Weekly, FOX , Rolling Stone and many many others, and the attention was more than well deserved. The opening was hosted by Henry Rollins who stayed the entire night talking with everyone that came through the doors and was the ultimate gracious host! Not only is this one of the best exhibits we've ever worked on, it's also up there with those we've been to. This show is on display through October 6 with a possible closing party currently being scheduled...![]() | |
